Sunscreen Products & Spf Whether you’re outdoors for recreational or work purposes, repeated exposure to the sun will have its natural consequences for your skin.

Regardless of color, skin that is repeatedly exposed to the sun tends to become tough and thick. Beyond the middle years of adulthood, the results can include wrinkly, leathery skin.

Irrespective of the circumstances for sun exposure, selecting a sunscreen product that offers some degree of protection from the sun’s UV rays can be one way to protect your skin from these ageing affects.

Due to the variety and range of sunscreen products available, here are some basic factors to consider in making an appropriate selection:

1. Ingredients:

Sunscreen products can be made with ingredients to protect against UVA rays, and / or other ingredients to protect against UVB rays (which are in fact more harmful for sun burning than UVA rays). The best products offer ingredients for protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Consider also the actual ingredient list. (I.e. Are they naturally derived / safe, or do they contain potentially harmful chemicals?).

2. SPF (Sun Protection Factor):

The SPF number on the product’s label refers to the strength of protection, and the length of time a sun-screening product will allow your skin to be in the sun without burning - relative to the length of time bare skin (or skin without the product applied) would burn or redden.

To sum that up, the SPF number tells people how much longer they can last out in the sun with protection for their skin, without being burned. The higher the SPF number, the longer the period of protection against the sun.

Sunscreen Products & Spf For example, let’s say ‘Joe’, a young student, would normally burn after 12 minutes of being out in the sun. He applies a sunscreen, also referred to as a sun block, with an SPF of 15. This means that he should be fine for 15 times his average amount of protection time. In other words, ‘Joe’ would be protected for up to 3 hours. Here’s the formula for calculating:
12 minutes x 15 SPF = 180 minutes (3 hours).

(Now if ‘Joe’ applied a sunscreen with an SPF of 30, he’d be protected for up to 6 hours. E.g. 12 minutes X 30 SPF = 360 minutes (6 hours)).

3. Skin Type:

When selecting a sunscreen, it’s important to consider the different skin types and how they react with exposure to the sun.

Young children: For ages 6 months+, consider a product with SPF of 15 or higher to protect against both sun tanning and burning. Also consider a product label that lists protection against both UVA and UVB rays (also known as the "broad-spectrum").

Skin Type - Very Fair: This skin type generally burns quickly. Tanning is rare. Consider sunscreen products containing SPF 20 to 30.

Skin Type - Fair: This skin type almost always burns easily. Some tanning can occur, although not much. Consider sunscreen products containing SPF 12 to 20.

Skin Type - Light: This skin type burns in the moderate range. Tanning is normally gradual, yielding a light brown shade. Consider sunscreen products containing SPF 8 to 12.

Skin Type - Medium: This skin type burns in the minimal range. Tanning happens much of the time, yielding a moderate brown shade. Consider sunscreen products containing SPF 4 to 8.

Skin Type - Dark: This skin type rarely burns. Tanning occurs big time, yielding a dark brown shade. Consider sunscreen products containing SPF 2 to 4.

Skin Type - Other: This skin type includes people with moles (or whose close blood-relatives have a history of moles), people with skin cancer in their family histories (including melanoma), and people with very fair skin and hair. As this is a high-risk category for health damage from too much UV exposure, consider using sunscreen products with the highest SPF available, combined with light to moderate sun exposure.

Once you’ve selected the most suitable sunscreen product, and regardless of your skin type, apply your sunscreen ‘before’ going out into the sun’s rays. To ensure the best possible UV protection, the sunscreen product should also be spread fairly thick, and in a uniform manner over all areas of the skin that will be exposed to the UV rays.

Whatever your current circumstances and choices are for going out in the sun, taking appropriate care of your skin ‘now’ will help determine a healthier and younger-looking skin in the future.

With the long, cold winter behind us, many people start shedding their clothes. But what people don’t realize is that this is the wrong thing to do. Why? The sun poses many threats - above and beyond being burned.

1. Sunburn No Worries About The Sun Using Sunscreen

It’s important to understand how sun exposure can burn your skin. Wikipedia explains: "UV radiation is divided into the UVA, UVB and UVC sub-bands. Ozone in the Earth’s atmosphere filters out a portion of this before it reaches the planet’s surface. UVC is almost entirely eliminated by the atmosphere, but enough UVA and UVB penetrates it in large enough quantities that sunburn can occur in less than 15 minutes. Nevertheless, the inflicted harm is often not immediately obvious." A first-degree sunburn can be painful and typically turns the skin pink or red. Severe sunburns, or second-degree burns, cause blistering and swelling of the skin, and will begin to peel three to eight days after exposure. Each blistering sunburn doubles the risk of developing skin cancer later in life.

Here are some helpful tips on treating a sunburn: *Apply a moisturizer with aloe three times a day * Drink a lot of fluids to prevent dehydration * Take a cool (not cold) bath and apply cool compresses to help alleviate discomfort *Ibuprofen may reduce swelling, pain and discomfort * Products containing Acetaminophen may also help reduce pain and discomfort * An antibiotic cream may be applied to broken blisters to prevent possible infection * Ointments, Vaseline and butter should not be applied to sunburns. These products are painful to remove and prevent heat from escaping the burned area.

No Worries About The Sun Using Sunscreen2. Premature Aging

"Photoaging" is the term dermatologists use to describe the aging of the skin caused by exposure to the sun’s rays. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, just a few minutes of sun exposure each day over the years can cause noticeable changes to the skin. "Photoaging occurs over a period of years. With more and more exposure to the sun, something very significant happens. The skin never forgets, just like an elephant. And with each insult, it loses its ability to repair itself, and damage accumulates. Scientific studies have shown that repeated ultraviolet (UV) exposure breaks down collagen and impairs the synthesis of new collagen. The sun does not only do this - it also attacks the elasti fiber of the skin. Sun-weakened skin ceases to spring back much earlier than skin protected from UV rays. Skin also becomes loose, wrinkled, and leathery much earlier with unprotected exposure to sunlight." This process will also multiply and increase the size of wrinkles.

3. Brown/Liver/Age Spots No Worries About The Sun Using Sunscreen

Part of the photoaging process includes liver spots (which have nothing to do with the liver), or age spots. These dark spots usually have rounded edges and look like large freckles and tend to appear on people in their 40’s and older. Age spots are not considered to be cancerous or pre-cancerous; although if you notice an age spot with uneven edges, consult your doctor for further examination.

4. Actinic Keratoses

Actinic keratoses are small, rough or scaly spots. They tend to appear on the face, ears, back of the hands and arms of middle-aged or older people with fair skin. Although they usually do not cause any symptoms, approximately 10% of untreated lesions develop into squamous cell carcinoma, a nonmalignant form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates more than 1 million new cases of highly curable basal and squamous cell cancers will be diagnosed this year.

5. Moles

Moles vary in size and can be pink, tan, brown or flesh-colored. They can be either flat or raised, round or oval, and rough or smooth. Some moles are present at birth, most appear by age 20, and new moles can still appear up to age 40. Be aware. Any mole that changes needs to be seen by a specialist in the skin. Why? It can indicate a skin cancer called a melanoma.

No Worries About The Sun Using Sunscreen6. Eye Damage

With excessive sun exposure you may also be burning the cornea of your eyes. Eye surface burns usually disappear within a couple of days, but may lead to further complications later in life. Prolonged UV exposure may be linked to the development of eye conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. UV light is typically more intense at midday (10 AM to 2 PM), and is dangerous even when it’s cloudy. The American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests wearing sunglasses that offer 99 to 100 percent UV-A and UV-B protection. Reflected sunlight off water, snow and pavement can be the most dangerous type of UV light because it is intensified. If you spend time on the water or in the snow, wear goggles or sunglasses that wrap around your temples because they block the sun’s rays from entering on the sides.

7. Skin Cancer

The most common or well-known damage that can happen to your body from excessive sun damage is skin cancer. Peter W. Welty, M.D., F.A.A.P., Dangers of Sun Exposure, explains how research has shown that a major factor in cancer formation may stem from early age exposure to the sun. "Some young children may be harmed more than adults by equivalent doses. Other cancers are associated with cumulative sun exposure, while another type is associated with short, intense, blistering sunburns. Clearly, those youngsters with fair skin are at a greater risk, and dark skinned persons are at a much lower risk." The most serious form of skin cancer is melanoma. According to the American Cancer Society, melanoma is diagnosed in more than 60,000 people each year and causes several thousand deaths.

Early Protection Early protection from the sun can eliminate these future dangers. Mary Mills Barrow and John F. Barrow, Sun Protection for Life, suggest: "Select an appropriate sunscreen SPF based on your skin type and how long you anticipate being in the sun. In general, a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher that is also labeled ‘broad-spectrum’ or ‘UVA and UVB’-used with sun protection clothing, hats, and sunglasses- will give the maximum protection available when you are outdoors."

Guide To Remove Age SpotsWhat if I told you it’s easy to remove age spots? A large segment of our adult population suffers from these dreaded spots, yet people are unaware of the basic steps they need to take for curing them effectively. In this article I’ll discuss three steps for effectively combating age spots.

1. Prevent age spots from forming in the first place
Instead of trying to remove age spots, it’s much easier to prevent them from forming in the first place itself.

Ultraviolet rays present in sun light are the biggest cause for age spot formation. The UV rays cause increased melanin production in the body, and when melanin gets concentrated at any place in the skin, brown spots appear - which we call age spots or liver spots.

To effectively protect your skin against the sun, apply a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15. Apply it at least 30 min before going out in the sun so that it can be absorbed by the skin properly. Wear protective clothing like hats and sunglasses which can shade you from the sun light.

Not only will this prevent age spots from forming, it will also lighten existing ones by regulating the melanin content in the skin.

2. Try a home made remedy
Using chemical peels or laser surgery for age spot removal can cause damage to your skin. These processes are destructive by nature and though they can remove spots, they can leave behind unwanted marks on the skin.

Instead, you can try using pure lemon juice or onion juice on the skin area affected with spots. These juices contain natural acids in a very mild concentration, and would not cause any harm to the skin.

3. Use a natural cream
For safe and effective results, you can use a good cream with natural ingredients to remove age spots. A good cream will contain the extract of many natural substances which help in cleaning the skin.

Extrapone nutgrass is most effective at dealing with age spots. It reduces the production of melanin in the skin up to 40%.

Burdock, red clover, and milk thistle are other natural ingredients which help lighten existing age spot by cleansing the blood stream.

You don’t need any elaborate and expensive procedures to remove age spots. Just stick to the basics and find a good natural cream, and you can have that spot-free skin of your youth back in no time at all.

3 Step Guide to Remove Age Spots

What if I told you it’s easy to remove age spots? A large segment of our adult population suffers from these dreaded spots, yet people are unaware.

Getting Rid Of Age Spots

So the question is should we be removing age spots? Well the bottom line is that, once you’ve been to the doctor and he is happy, that you don’t need to remove age spots. They don’t do health damage.

What Are The Causes of Age Spots

Age spots may grow with maturity, and frequently appear after lengthy exposure to the sun. They are much more frequent in people who freckle and who are sensitive to the sun. Although age spots aren’t a guarantee.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer to strike people than any other  form of cancer. Skin cancer is more common in fair-skinned people, but all skin types can develop skin cancer. The main cause of skin cancer is from ultraviolet radiation from too much time spent in the sun. Identifying the signs of skin cancer early, and avoiding overexposure to the sun are the two best ways to prevent skin cancer. The three major causes of skin cancer are heredity, environment, and ultraviolet light damage to the skin, mostly in children and teenagers. Studies show adults receive half of their lifetime ultraviolet exposure when they are 20 years old.Symptoms And Signs Of Skin Cancer

Did you know skin is our bodies largest organ. It protects our internal organs from injury, acts as a barrier between those organs and bacteria, and prevents the loss of valuable fluid from our body. It also regulated body temperature and communicates to the brain to allow for temperature, touch, and pain sensations. You can see why it is important to keep our skin healthy and free from any signs of skin cancer symptoms. The majority of skin cancers are classified as non-melanoma or melanoma.

Symptoms And Signs Of Skin Cancer
Non-melanoma skin cancer will develop on those areas of the body that are the most exposed to the sun. The early signs of skin cancer systems that appear on the body, face, ears, neck, lips, and the backs of our hands are where most non-melanoma skin cancer would be found. These signs of skin cancer rarely spread to another part of the body.

Skin cancer signs can be one extreme to the next, either the cancer can be slow growing or grow at a rapid rate.

Melanoma, a common skin cancer, Symptoms And Signs Of Skin Cancerbegins in the cells that produce the skin pigment or coloring known as melanin. Melanin also protects the deepest layers of the skin from harmful radiation from the sun. Melanoma accounts for a small percentage of skin cancer, but it is far more dangerous and life threatening than non-melanoma skin cancer. The chances of surviving melanoma skin cancer are better if it is caught in the earliest stage.

The signs of skin cancer include family history of skin cancer, multiple moles, a fair complexion, exposure to coal tar, pitch, creosote, arsenic compounds, and radium, and severe sunburn as a child.

Your body will show early signs of skin cancer symptoms, and both patients and doctors play an important role in finding signs of skin cancer. If you believe you have signs of skin cancer or have any change on the skin, consult your doctor. Any change can be a sign of skin cancer, like the size and color of a mole, or a growth that is darkly pigmented, or a new growth on the skin. If you have a change in the appearance of any bump or nodule, or if you have oozing, bleeding or scaling of the skin you should contact your doctor. Another sign of skin cancer to look for is if the color of the pigmentation spreads beyond the border of a mole or mark. Another sign of skin cancer would be a change in sensations to your skin, for example, itchiness, tenderness, or pain, it’s time to go to your doctor.

If you watch for any of the signs of skin cancer symptoms it can be prevented that is important to know. Avoid the sun for extended periods of time and make sure to practice sun safety. If you fear that you have signs of skin cancer symptoms, avoid the sun altogether between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM. Try to stay in the shade especially when rays are the strongest. To protect your skin from the sun rays it is helpful to wear a long sleeved shirt.

If you show any of the signs of skin cancer symptoms, using sunscreen is important when you are going to be in the sun. Using a sunscreen of SPF 15 or above when outdoors will help you protect your skin from skin cancer. Use sunscreen generously and always reapply if you have been in the water, are heavily perspiring, or have recently toweled off.

For prevention of developing signs of skin cancer wear a hat this will keep your face, ears, and neck shaded and provide some protection. A wide-brimmed hat is the best choice but if you are wearing a baseball cap, remember to protect your ears and neck with sunscreen.

Your eyes also need protection from developing signs of skin cancer. The best protection for the eyes and surrounding skin is to wear sunglasses. Sunglasses with 99-100 percent UV absorption are recommended when you are in the sun.

Protect yourself, and alert your doctor if you think you may be developing any signs of skin cancer.

Spray Tanning Is The Safest WaySkin cancer is just as prevalent today as it has been for the last several years. Given the amount of news coverage sun damaged skin gets, it is still on the rise. People still don-t head the warnings of the possible dangers of over-exposure to the sun-s rays. There is a way to get that sun kissed look without exposing yourself to the dangers of skin damage. Spray tanning has become an accepted means of getting that bronzed look over the last few years. Spray tanning is easy to apply and easy to find. Most day spas provide this service to their clients.

First things first, however. In order to maximize your self-tan or spray tan you will want to prepare your skin to accept and hold the tan for as long as possible. Exfoliation is the first step in preparing the skin. Getting rid of the dead skin cells opens the skin to accept the tanning agents to their maximum degree. Secondly, apply a hydrating moisturizer. Exfoliation can often times dry out your skin, so apply a generous amount of your favorite moisturizer. Hydrated skin will be more likely to take an even coating of tanning spray or gel.

Once you-ve gotten your healthy look from the self-tanner or spray tan and you-re happy to go out in your bikini, be sure to follow these sun safety tips:

*Wear SPF sunscreen of at least 15
*Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the glare of the sun. Spray Tanning Is The Safest Way
*Protect your lips with sunscreen balm.
*Reapply sunscreen every hour or two.
*Drink plenty of water. This seems like such a simple thing, but most people don-t drink nearly enough water to keep their skin hydrated.
*Rinse off chlorine. High alkalinity can disrupt the ideal condition of the skin leaving it dry.
*The sun will fade color treated hair. Wear a hat if you want to keep the integrity of your hair color.

Sun kissed skin is indeed beautiful. Getting and maintaining that look is as simple as visiting your salon for a spray tan that can last for weeks. It is a safe alternative to tanning beds and over-exposure to the sun-s rays.

Improve Your Skin's Appearance Without SurgeryToo often, women and men go for the quick fix for solving skin problems instead of changing bad habits. Instead of going under the knife or getting Botox injections, there are simpler things people can do to change their skin’s appearance like quitting smoking and remembering to apply sunscreen every day. Even though more and more skin care specialist are getting Juvederm training and Restylane training in order to offer these popular requests, there are other less expensive and invasive things people can do. Here are five super easy and helpful solutions to better skin without surgery.
1.Wear Sunscreen and Moisturizer Year Round/ Avoid Tanning Beds

So often people forget that sunscreen needs to be worn everyday not just in the spring and summer months. Cloudy cold days just as much as hot and sunny days can cause skin damage. Harmful UVA/UVB rays that penetrate your skin and cause skin damage, not to mention wrinkles, can be prevented by wearing SPF 15 or higher every day. Wearing moisturizer and sunscreen year round can be one of the cheapest things you can do to prevent skin damage in the future as well as make your skin look lovely today.
Avoid tanning beds; tanning beds will cause permanent damage to your skin. Look to tinted moisturizing creams and spray tanning methods for a golden glow without the damage.

2.Schedule Routine Moisturizing Facials, Not Botox Injections
Moisturizing your face with routine facials can do wonders for your skin. Some could argue that for the price, Botox injections are comparable in price because people get injections only twice or three times a year, whereas facials every month or twice a week can really add up. Unlike Botox, facials exfoliate dead skin cells, help replenish the moisture that our skin needs and helps to protect skin from drying out through moisturizing.
Improve Your Skin's Appearance Without Surgery

3.Drink Water
Drinking water is about the smartest, easiest and cheapest thing you can do for your body. Hydrating your body from the inside out not only makes you feel better all around, your skin will look and feel more moisturized. Drinking water also helps to flush out the toxins that are in your body and help improve the elasticity in your body’s skin cells thus creating a smooth and hydrated appearance, eliminating dark circles and puffy eyes.

4.Exercise
Engaging in high energy exercise, taking a sauna or engaging in Bikram yoga are all great ways to get your heart pumping and the blood flowing and thus making your skin sweat. Sweating throughout your body is your body’s way of flushing out toxins, distributing moisture and cooling and cleansing the skin. Exercising also helps firm up your skin naturally.

5.Stop Smoking
Pollution and toxins are inhaled into your body with each cigarette you smoke causing internal and external damage to your skin, lungs, teeth and hair. Once you stop smoking, you start the rejuvenation process on your skin and help your body renew itself.
Even though your body is constantly renewing its epidermis, if you keep damaging your skin with cigarette smoke, harmful sun rays and lack of hydration and exercise, your body will physically show the signs of wear and tear. Instead of engaging in bad habits and hoping your body will react well to Botox to turn back what time has done, start taking care of your skin today with these five tips and not only will you save your skin, you will save money as well.

The sun releases many kinds of radiation, each with a wavelength band that is specified. As soon as UVR reach the skin, it is readily absorbed by the skin molecules that intermingle more intensely with a specific wavelength. This act may result in damaging the skin proteins, lipids and cellular DNA, eventually leading to skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation is broken into three types of wavelengths:

- UV-A: The longest wavelength is not absorbed by the ozone. It deeply penetrates the skin.
- UV-B: It is blocked partially by the ozone layer and is accountable for sunburns.
- UV-C: This is entirely absorbed by the atmosphere; it can only be encountered from artificial radiation sources.

1. Sunscreen sunscreenselection sunscreen

Sunscreens can absorb or redirect these harmful rays before they can interact with the skin. A sunscreen product will typically contain a combination of chemical and moisturizing ingredients. Certain ingredients are much better in blocking UVB while others block UVA. Chemical sunscreen ingredients PABA esters, cinnamates, para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), benzophenes, salicylates, octocrylene and dibenzoyl-methane. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are physical blockers and board spectrum which block both UVB and UVA.
2. What is SPF?

Stands for Sun Protection Factor. The number is determined and established by the degree of light that stimulate and encourages redness in skins that are sunscreen-protected, divided by the degree of light that encourages redness in skins that are not protected is the SPF. It is simply a measure of protection from UVB which ranges from 1 to 45 or above. A sunscreen product having an SPF of 15 will filters 92 percent of the UVB. Or, a sunscreen product having an SPF of 15 will defer the beginning of a sunburn in an individual who would burn in 10 minutes to burn in 150 minutes. The SPF 15 sunscreen can allow an individual to remain in the sun 15 times longer.

3. Sunscreen Application And Selection:

- Before buying a sunscreen product, read the label and be sure that it will filter and absorb both UVA and UVB.

- Check also the products level of protection. SPF 15, or 30, depending on how long you usually stay out in the sun.

- Keep in mind that inexpensive brands are just as effective as the expensive brands.

- Check the expiration date. An expired product will lose its potency thereby will not perform its role. This could lead to serious sun burn.

- Choose a product too, that is labeled board spectrum, to give your skin complete protection from UVB, UVA and UVC.

- Remember that lighter skin will burn more quickly than darker skin. Therefore light skinned individuals needs higher SPF.

- The product should comply and abide with the standard AS/NZS2604 to support their claims and declaration for SPF, water resistance and board spectrum. This should be in their label.

- Check the products formulation. It must be non allergenic so it is safe to use on sensitive skin and on the face as well as nonacnegenic so as not to clog the pores.

- Insist on a product that is PABA free, containing no irritating chemicals and is safe to use on the face.

- A water proof sunscreen is best.

- Read the label and make sure that aside from sun protection, it also contains essential skin moisturizers to nourish your skin at the same time.

- Before applying a sunscreen, the skin should be clean and dry so that it can be well absorbed.

- Apply a liberal amount of sunscreen all over the body and pay special attention to the face, nose, ears, cheeks, and scalp as these are areas that are prone to sun burn.

- Reapply often, when perspiring heavily or after swimming. It is best to apply it fifteen minutes before you go out in the sun.

- Even on cloudy days, there is still a need for sunscreen application.

- Even with a sunscreen, avoid the sun during the hottest hours of the day starting at ten in the morning until four in the afternoon.

Safe SunscreenRemember the days of ordering a coffee at your favourite caf -when your most difficult decision was to choose between an espresso, a cappuccino or a flat white? Today of course, your choices are much more diverse - throw in Affogattos, Machhiatos, Viennas, Melloccinos, and Mochas (to name but a few). Of course, your choices don’t end there. Will that be with skim milk or whole? Decaf or regular? In a mug or a cup…?

Now of course that’s just a simple example using coffee. But how do you feel about your choices when it comes to selecting a tanning or sunscreen agent?

Not surprisingly, when faced with the variety and range of products on the market today, the average consumer can find this selection process a little more overwhelming than ordering a cup of coffee.

Tanning products or sunscreen agents are not only available in multiple forms including sprays, lotions, sticks, gels etc.: they can also be targeted to different activities, age ranges and skin types. They are produced by both smaller (less familiar) manufacturers, as well as by the more popular brand name manufacturers such as ‘Banana Boat’, ‘ChapStick’, ‘Clarins’, ‘Clinique’, ‘Coppertone’, ‘Estee Lauder’, ‘Johnson’s’, ‘Neutrogena’, ‘Oil of Olay’, and ‘Vaseline’.

In response to the demands of consumers, manufacturers continue to provide an ever increasing number of products for you to choose from, with many targeted to specific markets. However, the variety of choices doesn’t mean it makes the selection process easy.

So where on earth do you start?

Besides your skin type, here are some simple tips to consider when making your selection from the variety of tanning and sunscreen products available:

a) Chosen Activity: - Being outdoors is not the only element to take into consideration when factoring in your amount of exposure to the sun. You also need to note the intensity with regards to climate, the season, location and time of day.

For example, just because you may be hiking in a cool mountain region or snow skiing, doesn’t mean you should throw all caution aside. Wind and UV  rasunscreensunscreenys still reach you, so protection would be wise. Consider also any exposure to surfaces with reflective qualities (i.e. snow, water, sand, etc.), as these can intensify UV ray harm. Activities that make you work up a sweat or those involving water (e.g. basketball, jogging, sun bathing on a hot beach, biking, water skiing, jet skiing, parasailing, outdoor work and exercise etc.), have the potential to wash off your sunscreen, and therefore need to be addressed also.

Choose a sunscreen product for these activities with both UVA and UVB protection and an SPF of 15 or higher, when possible. As for water / sweat activities, choose a product that offers a waterproof or water-resistant agent.

Tip: Where appropriate, you should also consider dressing to cover up as much skin as possible (e.g. wearing long sleeves, a scarf or hat, slacks or jogging pants).

b) Age: - There are only a few words of caution about age. First of all, health care providers do NOT recommend using alcohol-based sunscreen products on children. And they do NOT recommend using sunscreen agents of any type on babies under the age of 6 months. For children older than 6 months, a lotion is the preferred form of sunscreen, over a spray, for example. And the SPF should be a minimum of 15.

c) Use on Your Body: - Your choice of tanning product also depends upon where you are going to apply the lotion, gel, spray or other form. And it also depends upon the health of the area of the body.

For example, there are lip balms with sunscreen (solid or gel-based ones), which not only help the lips, but can also touch up spots in a hurry. Also if you’re trying to apply protection to fingers, ears, nose and other small areas, a physical sunscreen agent, lotion or gel may be easier than a spray. If you have dry skin, you might want to try a product in lotion or cream form. For oily skin, gel-based or alcohol forms of sunscreen might be better choices. N.B: A word of caution: Do not use alcohol-based products with inflamed skin or eczematous.

Keeping the above considerations in mind, should give you a great starting point from which to choose your tanning product or sunscreen agent.

In addition, a recommendation from a friend for a particular product, (assuming they have similar skin type and circumstances), - or even a particular brand name (remembering that the more popular manufacturers produce products catering to different skin types, activities etc.), can sometimes also be helpful in narrowing down your choices.

Ultimately the choice should be based upon your individual situation, your skin type, and your personal preferences. What works for one person may not be the most ideal for another.

Once you’ve done some basic research and have found a particular product you feel is suitable, then why not just start with that product. If you find it doesn’t offer you the results you expected, then simply be prepared to do a little more research, look around further and modify your choices accordingly. While there may be some trial and error involved initially, by becoming more familiar with your preferences and the types of products available, you’re sure to find the product that’s right for you.

Zinc and the Nano Sunscreen Revolution

Leading up to the trial we met up at Brian’s house to have our skin type graded – I am a melanin deficient skin type one (out of a possible six) which means that I don’t usually tan and burn readily (see the Fitzpatrick classification Scale. However, for Zinc to function as an effective sunscreen agent it does need to be present on the surface of the skin and not taken into it– this is another issue and one that formulators may have to grapple with.

Choosing a Tanning or Sunscreen Agent

Keeping the above considerations in mind, should give you a great starting point from which to choose your tanning product or sunscreen agent. In addition, a recommendation from a friend for a particular product.

Tips to Choosing a Tanning or Sunscreen Agent

But how do you feel about your choices when it comes to selecting a tanning or sunscreen agent? Not surprisingly, when faced with the variety and range of products on the market today, the average consumer can find this selection.

natural sunscreenWithout question, the most effective treatment for sun damage is prevention. This involves routine use of sunscreen products.  Many different sunscreen chemicals work in different ways. Often chemists will mix two or more sunscreen chemicals together in a preparation. This type of product will filter more ultraviolet rays, and the combination will often also help to filter both UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreen chemicals may either absorb or reflect ultraviolet rays. natural sunscreen

Frequently used chemicals that absorb the rays are methoxycinnimate, para-amino-benzoic acid (PABA), padimate O, padimate A, oxybenzone, methyl salicylate, and benzophenone. Benzophenone and oxybenzone are primarily UVA absorbers, while the other chemicals listed are primarily UVB absorbers. This is why these chemicals are often combined to produce a sunscreen that blocks out a larger spectrum of ultraviolet rays. These screen products are sometimes referred to as broad-spectrum sunscreens.

Nonabsorbing, reflective sunscreen chemicals include titanium dioxide, a pigment that is also frequently used in foundation makeup to give opacity to foundations. Zinc oxide, a well known sunscreen, is the chemical often used by surfers on their noses. Zinc oxide is also used in sunscreen products. Bot of these chemicals reflect ultraviolet rays, rather than absorbing them. Their main advantages are that they reflect large amounts of ultraviolet rays and that they are less likely to cause allergic reactions than the absorbing chemicals. Their main disadvantage is that they are opaque and can be seen on the surface of the skin. Esthetically, many people will not use these products because, even in a refined form, they have some color and often appear pasty on the surface of the skin. A new form of micronized titanium dioxide has been developed and may in the future prove useful in sunscreen products, because it is less likely to be seen.
